WEEKLY MENU 07.12.26

The Weekly Menu 07.12.24 continues to pay homage to National Grilling Month.

Every week during the summer is grilling time around beautiful Erieland, and our Weekly Menu 07.12.26 is no exception. Our home is blessed with an exceptional griller: Bert never disappoints when he is in his outdoor arena. And arena it has become. When we were a young couple just starting out, we bought (and laboriously put together) a new grill every couple of years because we bought the cheapest grill we could find, and they never lasted.
We finally bit the bullet and invested in a Weber Grill 8 or 9 years ago. We have had to replace a few things on it, but the grill is a trouper overall. This year, we’re pricing grates because ours have finally given up the ghost – which is not bad considering how much use they get.
Bert has a veritable galley kitchen in the backyard, though. We got a charcoal grill a couple of years ago so that he could master a different taste. It’s messy, and the charcoal chimney doesn’t always lend itself to immediate lighting, but the results make it all worthwhile.
The last part of the “U” shaped kitchen that Bert has going on in the backyard is a Blackstone, which we got last year. Honestly, this is “griddling” rather than grilling, but it’s outside, so I’m counting it. Be warned about the learning curve for this thing. And it rusts. (!) It’s completely different than grilling and an all-new experience for our outdoor chef. Luckily, Bert has prevailed!
This cover helped. A lot.
Can’t you picture Bert outside, being the master of all he sees, wielding a griddle spatula like no one’s business?
My favorite grilled food is probably burgers—or hot dogs.
But I’m ever open to options. Some of our favorites include:
Grilled Jambalaya
Rainbow Veggie Skewers
Grilled Chicken Cordon Blue
Italiano Burgers

Grilled Chicken with Garlic Alfredo smothered fettuccine made the cut for Sunday. I’m helping out inside with the appetizer. Sausage Stuffed Peppers might work as a grilled item, but we’re not putting it to the test. We’re having a classic cookie that I’ve never made before – Black and White Cookies are in store for the crowd around here. They ARE available in most bakeries, though, so if baking is not your forte, you are still in luck!
I’ve never made “Chopped Burger Tacos,” but they sounded like a fun mix-up, and they’re bound to be easier. I add the entire package of ground beef to a screaming-hot cast-iron skillet and leave it alone. Once the bottom is caramelized, I’ll sprinkle on plenty of chili powder and S&P before chopping them up with a spatula. That’ll work, right?
We’ve got the trusty crockpot in play on Thursday for a recipe that my mother-in-law used to make. Sausage patties go in, along with peppers, onions, ketchup (!) and tomato sauce and cook on low for 4-6 hours. We’re scheduled for garlicky elbow mac, but mashed spuds would be excellent as well.
