WEEKLY MENU 05.31.26

We’re making milk the star during the Weekly Menu 05.31.26~

National Dairy Month gets it start during the Weekly Menu 05.31.26: June is IT, and includes World Milk Day, National Cheese Day, and National Chocolate Ice Cream Day all in the first week!
We’re long-time milk mavens around here. Back in the day (WAY back), the boys used to go through 5 – 6 gallons of milk a week. DOLD used to bring up gallons of the good stuff instead of wine when he’d come for dinner. I never bought whole milk (after the boys were weaned from it), but my Dad made it a ritual. The boys would drink a cold glass and talk about how it was like drinking a milkshake compared to the 1% I usually stocked.
Bert was constantly picking up a gallon of our regular milk (1%) on his way home from work. It was pricey keeping our babies in milk, but sooo good!
Cow’s milk has been making a comeback in the world of milk. The consumption of all other milks (oat, soy, almond, and other plant-based milks) has decreased to less than 10% of the total consumption (according to the USDA) for the first time in 2025, with whole milk being the type of cow’s milk that has had the biggest surge. It’s driven primarily by the increased need for protein that has taken over the US.
I had a glass of milk at a diner the other week. It came from one of those little refrigerators that hold a bag of milk and have a tap, prevalent in cafeterias. It was fabulous. I desperately wanted one of those back when the boys were young. When I was young, we had a milkman and a milkbox. The milk was always cool-ish, but didn’t make your teeth hurt the way good cold milk does.
Weekly Menu 05.31.26
How are we incorporating milk into the Weekly Menu 05.31.26? Milkshakes, cheese, and plenty of butter. Sunday supper gets started with one of Bert’s faves: port wine cheese with hard pretzels. Then, a smoked turkey breast (we’re buying it smoked – we don’t have a smoker, and don’t plan on it) will be placed ever so gently on top of mashed potatoes that will involve some cream and some butter. Dessert? We’ll put the blender to work with a classic vanilla milkshake. Never let it be said that I don’t lean HEAVY into a theme.
No blender? No problem – pivot to root beer floats. It’s almost as good, and ’tis’tis the season.
Monday, we’re going meatless with black bean soup made from canned beans. It’s fast and easy, and it goes great with the triple-cheese quesadillas. Ah cheese.
Everything during the Weekly Menu 05.31.26 is a little better with cheese.
