I can’t lie – the picture I chose for the Weekly Menu 02.14.21 was selected solely because it had a great heart on it, and it’s Valentine’s week. But then I read some more about the fabulousness that is the Matterhorn, and had to share.

You might notice that the Top of the Matterhorn looks very familiar. Why, you might ask?

But that’s not the only reason ~

The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. It is a large, near-symmetric pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, whose summit is 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe.[note 3] The four steep faces, rising above the surrounding glaciers, face the four compass points and are split by the HörnliFurggenLeone/Lion, and Zmutt ridges. The mountain overlooks the Swiss town of Zermatt, in the canton of Valais, to the north-east and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia in the Aosta Valley to the south.

But enough social studies.

As I mentioned, the picture was actually chosen for the heart that frames it. Valentine’s Day is here again, and, as usual, I’m conflicted. Bert and I agreed to forgo the ridiculously priced cards this year, recognizing the whole “Hallmark Card” aspect of this day. But I do like to shower a little love.

Breakfast is a great time to party – especially when it’s on the weekend. Everyone loves heart pancakes! Check out the Valentine’s Day Breakfast post to see how crazy I used to get when the boysies were little. They’ll still get a heart-box full of chocolate, but the decorations are sadly lacking.

Valentine’s Dinner is best at home.

Dinner on Sunday is a celebration, so it includes a bunch of family favorites. It’s mostly based on the Steakhouse Mastery Menu – but we’re switching up the spuds. One of the good things to come out of the pandemic is that our favorite steak restaurants sells raw steaks we can cook at home. It saves us all the aggravation of spending Valentine’s night out at a restaurant, plus it cuts the cost substantially. And we know the steaks are delish. Winning on all fronts!

Another reason for the steak is so we can do a little celebrating for Mardi Gras. Ash Wednesday is this week, so two meatless dinners are on the horizon. I don’t mind – fish and/or vegetarian meals make me super happy. I feel for anyone that’s a solid meat eater, though, so beef to start just makes sense. Hopefully it’ll take the edge off later in the week.

Is it you and a special someone?

Check out our upside down menu for a Romantic Dinner. Don’t put off the chocolate for dessert~ enjoy it in front of the fire (or a video of one). Put the kids to bed before this one.
