Summer is moving quickly, so we’re planning a family favorite outing during the Weekly Menu 08.09.26~
WHAT regional fave are we honoring during the Weekly Menu 08.09.26? I’ve waxed poetic about it here before, but I’ve updated the pictures to bring it up to date. I’ve been going to the White Turkey Drive-In for as long as I can remember. When I started going, they had an old-fashioned cash register – only it wasn’t old-fashioned then. My brothers would order a full meal, then a second full meal, before finishing up with the classic Root Beer Float. Preferably the Super Shuper. My favorite sandwich is tough to pick, but I always start with the classic – the place is named for it, after all.
It’s a little tough to see, but there is a swipe of butter on the top of the bun and a sprinkle of coarse salt. They were shredding turkey before it became cool – the place has been around since 1952. And it is a quintessential drive-in. You’re always within 20 feet of your car. Alas, they are only open during the bright and shiny summer season from Mother’s Day until Labor Day. We always go at least once, but sometimes can squeeze it in a second time. The White Churk (as it became known) is located in Conneaut, Ohio, which is about a 30-mile run for us – each way. Road Trip! We spend the whole drive out drooling, and the whole drive back trying to keep awake after all that food.

So are we having White Turkey Sandwiches during the Weekly Menu 08.09.26? Nope. We’re actually heading to the White Turkey for Sunday Dinner! Bert has acquiesced to attending, and we’re hopeful our darling DIL will come too. It’s a free-for-all! It’s unlikely we’ll all be able to sit together at the counter, but, very conveniently, they have picnic tables in the back.
What’s my plan? I order a Root Beer Float as an appetizer, and then go virtuous with a white turkey sandwich. Maybe some fries.
We’ve got the grill going on Monday with a super easy summer side that also avoids lettuce, which we’re considering a win currently. Broccoli Salad is, possibly, my most favorite side dish ever – not just during the summer. We’re using up the Sam’s Club super size bag of fishsticks on tacos for Tuesday night. I cook them normally with a heavy sprinkle of chili powder for the perfect, crispy taco filling.
Wednesday we’re switching up the sheet pan dinner a little bit – frozen meatballs (I’ll buy the little ones) and gnocchi are replacing our more standard sausage and potato. Sounds like fun, huh?
Our crockpot summer meal this week is super simple – Tangy Sweet French Chicken has only 5 ingredients. The main ingredient besides chicken is a bottle of French Dressing. Thumbs up for a dump and forget meal.
