WEEKLY MENU 08.23.26

We’re not gearing up to return to school during the Weekly Menu 08.23.26: once again, it’s happening without us!

The Weekly Menu 08.23.26 pays homage to all returning to school (and those who have already done so). Even though we don’t have anyone heading back into the classroom except the OG Baby Boy’s wife, we’re down to party. I’m thinking I’m going to call her the OGDIL. She is the favorite daughter-in-law for sure. She is going back to school, but not as a student. She’s a fourth-grade teacher. That’s as close as the rest of us are getting to school.
This is how I always felt about the boys going back to school:
I didn’t feel this way once the boys were in college – I thoroughly hated that return to school. Waiting until they were well away from us to cry wasn’t always easy. Sigh.
I loved the routine of school during grade school and high school, and autumn has always been my favorite time of year. The school supply shopping was the best of times and the worst of times. We had a list from the boys’ teachers in grade school, so we spent an hour or so in sheer delight shopping for all the pens, pencils, notebooks, and composition books we could find, followed immediately by a deep cringe at the checkout as we waited for the grand total.
Kids are expensive.
I’ll tell you a little secret: I still love buying all the school supplies. Only now I buy the fun colored pens and beautiful composition books for me. (Affiliate Links follow. See Disclaimer Page for Details.)
Back when we did go back to school, we would have had an entry on the Weekly Menu 08.23.26 for our “Pre-School Dinner.” We’d head out for a nice meal, making sure to get a family picture that we could compare to the previous year (and possibly use on the Christmas card.) This year, we’re popping the “Back to School End of Summer Picnic” into play for Sunday dinner instead.
Weekly Menu 08.23.26
Sunday dinner during the Weekly Menu 08.23.26 is taken almost verbatim from the Back to School End of Summer Picnic, with a few notable switch-outs. We’re replacing the cream puffs with our awesome copycat Zebra Cake. I never got one of those in my lunch, but I did always want one. I’ll make one big Zebra Cake instead of individual ones to make serving easier. I’ve also including some Rainbow Veggie Skewers because they’re so pretty, but it’s corn on the cob season around here, so I’ll make some of those too, even though they didn’t make it on the menu. Look at me winging it!
I saw a video on “the best way to butter corn-on-the-cob” (as if there could be a bad way): take a piece of bread or a roll, put a knob of butter on it, and rub away. Then you have perfectly buttered corn AND a fabulous corny piece of bread to nosh on. Brills.
The Weekly Menu 08.23.26 is full of easy, fast, comfort foods to make the transition better for everyone. Monday is Pork Chops Italiano – which I promise to take pictures of and get a post about ASAP. It’s a super easy, family-friendly dinner that makes everyone look forward to pork. Summertime-friendly grilled chicken tacos are on there, as are delicious and salty Mongolian Meatballs.
Maid-Rite Loose Meat Sandwiches are a Midwestern thing that we should ALL be eating. It’s cooked, crumbled ground meat on smooshed Texas Toast. Check it out – it’s so good and crazy easy.
