WEEKLY MENU 11.20.22

The best holiday of the year happens during the Weekly Menu 11.20.22 ~ Thankfully, it’s also one of the easiest meals to pull off!

Thanksgiving is part of the Weekly Menu 11.20.22~ yippee! We get to spend it with some of our most favorite people, those that we are most thankful for. Of course, it’s a little bittersweet because not everyone we’d love to spend just one more minute with can be here.

My mother was an absolute master at Thanksgiving, and her use of lists was legendary. She made dinner for ten people pretty much every night, so a turkey dinner was zero problem with a little planning. (Did I ever mention that I come from a pretty big family? Eight kids. Some picky eaters too.)

I owe my cooking skills to her as well as my use of lists. If you want to see an example of how that comes together, check out:

There’s even a grocery list in there. And a list of what to do each and every day during the build-up to Thanksgiving. During the pandemic, I put together a post about a celebratory meal for a much smaller group of people, and those people that had never done the cooking before, because we all had to make the most important meal of the year.

Covid Thanksgiving: Small Batch and Easy

And I owe it all to Mom. Sure, she might have given us all food poisoning one year, but who’s crowing about that? Those turkeys don’t thaw themselves, and putting them out on the counter to do so last minute is a no-no for a reason. (Our turkey is already in the fridge – how about you?)

Ten pounds of mashed potatoes, wet and dry stuffing, good gravy, corn, squash, and a ton of accoutrements joined the party too. Olive platter? Check. Mixed Nuts? Check. Blue cheese stuffed celery? Check. Bread & Butter for days? Check. Special mints? Check. Apple, pecan and pumpkin pie? Check. Jello salad?

Blech.

Yeah. Not everything made the transition from Mom’s table when I started making Thanksgiving Dinner. One thing that did? Cooking the neck, gizzards and random turkey organs for DOLD. And I wasn’t the only one prepping them. Aunt Mary Therese (AMT) cooked them too, just in case he stopped by. Boiled with a half an onion and some celery, they were the pinnacle of his turkey day when served with an iced Pepsi. He would stop by early in the day, eat his bowl of yuck and tell me that the turkey was going to be absolutely fabulous because the innards were so tasty.

Because that little brown bag absolutely held the neck from our turkey. Uh huh. Sure.

We always eat a traditional meal~

I love seeing all the various alternatives to the main course and side dish options galore, but we just stick with the tried and true. Until this year. Never fear. We didn’t take anything off the menu. We added to it. Why? It turns out that a fair number of our attendees don’t care for turkey. In fact, loathing may be a closer word for the feeling several of the boysies have.

We’re adding both glazed ham and macaroni & cheese to the Thanksgiving buffet during the Weekly Menu 11.20.22. Why macaroni and cheese? It’s delicious. And when I asked for alternative sides, every one of the boys mentioned it.

So we couldn’t submarine the corn casserole, but macaroni will take it’s place on my plate.

Of course, the Weekly Menu 11.20.22 revolves around Thanksgiving, but there’s a lot of eating that needs to happen between Sunday dinner and then. Baby Boy is home from school, so we’re having a big Italian Feast to start the week. It’s easy and a crowd pleaser. Plus? Pasta.

The glory of the Chopped Burger is that it’s delicious and ridiculously simple to make – no patty forming required. The picture doesn’t do it justice, but look at that burger cooking method if you get a chance.

I actually scheduled take-out Pizza for Wednesday night. When you check out the Thanksgiving 101 post you’ll see that I’m already spending a fair amount of time in the kitchen that day, and I’m going to deserve a break. Trust me.

Everyone has been talking about leftovers, but I’m sticking with old school Turkey sammies (and ham sammies) on Saturday. A day in between the big day and the leftovers really helps sweeten their taste.
