You know why we’re eating Irish based foods during the Weekly Menu 03.13.22: Saint Patrick’s Day is here again! This annual harbinger of spring is a fabulous time to celebrate the awesome Irish and their Emerald Isle. This week, at least, everyone has a little Irish attitude. DOLD was of 100% Irish heritage, so despite the fact that Mom had 100% German heritage, he always said we kids were also 100% Irish based. (Affiliate links follow – see Disclaimer Page for more details.) Interestingly, I tried the 23 and Me DNA Test and found out I my genes were actually 67% Irish, instead of 50%. So I’ve got that going for me.

Back in the day Saint Patrick’s Day was an all day drinking celebration akin to the best New Years Eve ever. Now it’s a little more subdued for us, although a pint or two of Guinness will be raised.

The Post Picture is of the Cliffs of Moher.

They are one of the most famous landmarks in Ireland, and they are spectacular. Several years ago we were lucky enough to visit Ireland, and these were a high point. Honestly? There were no low points. Except maybe that we weren’t there long enough. We had been there for two or three days when Bert asked when we could visit Ireland again. The land itself is beyond gorgeous, but the people made the trip. The Guinness helped too.

We’re starting the Weekly Menu 03.13.22 with a simple beef stew – Guinness Braised Beef. It’s a recipe that takes some time, so Sunday Dinner works best, although you can employ a Crock Pot to let it cook throughout the day if you’d rather have it on Thursday (Saint Patrick’s Day proper). The recipe includes deets on crock pot cookery.

Disclaimer: We’re buying the Rueben Sandwiches. I cooked corned beef in a crock pot (which is the best way to do it) when I was pregnant one year, and the smell of it cooking All. Day. Long. meant that I couldn’t even eat it at dinner. Or cook it at home ever again. McGarrey’s Oakwood Cafe has the best Ruebens in the city, so we’ll call in a pick-up order from there. We’ll top off dinner with some homemade Irish Cream to celebrate some more with a sweet little sip.

Are you also getting sticker shock at the price of meat? The Guinness Braised Beef uses stew meat, which is one of the cheapest cuts, so that’s good. But we’re going meatless on Monday and Friday to help combat rising prices. Lent gives us a great excuse!
