Mother’s Day starts the Weekly Menu 05.08.22 and we go from there.

I’m not much for eating “female” centric meals, so the main course for Mother’s Day during the Weekly Menu 05.08.22 is not chicken salad in a pineapple. I’m going straight for meat and potatoes. Mother’s Day creates a bit of a conundrum for a foodie like me – the “special menus” at restaurants always cut out the good stuff, and I have to step aside as the main cook. No worries though – Bert and the boys have me covered.

Mother’s Day is a curious one for many people. It’s a fun day for the moms out there that get special treatment, but it’s also pretty bittersweet for people missing their own mothers. It’s tough for the woman that longs to be a mom but isn’t. And it’s full of anticipation for those expecting to be mothers.

I wrote about being a mom.

Here’s an excerpt.

“Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” Elizabeth Stone

The job I enjoy more than any other is that of being a mother of three sons. I’m sure girl babies would have been fabulous too, but the boys. Ah the boys. The fights. The smell. The fart jokes. The giggles about words that should be innocuous. The sports watching. Sports playing. The sports knowledge. The swagger. The dirt. And the cuddles. My Lord, the cuddles. How could anything possibly be better than the smell of our baby boy’s breath?

Then they grew and grew. At each point I wondered how could anything be better than this? And they grew even more and matured and it was. Better every moment, every day. There was and is a constant stream of change, and we get to experience the absolute joy and absolute heartbreak of seeing them becoming their own men. How did that even happen?

We have truly been gifted with the very presence of these boy/men: unbelievably smart, loving, kind, funny, happy. Even when they are away from home, learning to live their own lives, we are enthusiastic observers and happy participants in the big decisions and frustrating occurrences they share with us.

I read years ago that becoming a mother meant forever having your heart go walking around outside your body. A small price, really, for the unbelievable joy that being a Mom has brought.

Motherhood

Anywho, {wipes away tears} we still need to eat. Weekly Menu 05.08.22 ahead!

We’re starting out the Weekly Menu 05.08.22 with a fabulous grilled feast. Bert is in charge of the cooking, and Baby Boy is doing cleanup with the appetizer. Honestly? We’re buying dessert, although the Blueberry Bars on the menu are fabulous warm with a little scoop of ice cream. Or a big scoop.

Check out the Mother’s Day Menu for instructions.

We’re trying a two ingredient crockpot meal on Monday with the French Onion Meatballs. I’m mashing some cauliflower, although mashed potatoes will be on offer as well. I’ll use either a boxed or frozen variety, but I know none of the boys will eat the cauliflower. Because despite all claims, it tastes like cauliflower.

We’re having “garlic elbows” with our Italian Sloppy Joes. I found the recipe when I was on cafeteria duty. It’s a tough one. Ready? Assemble three ingredients: elbow mac, butter, and garlic powder. Boil the elbow mac and toss with butter and plenty of garlic powder. Delicious and guaranteed to give everyone horrendous breath. Score!

D suggested making his favorite meal into a pizza, and the Chicken Fra Diavolo Pizza is born! Fingers crossed – but how bad can that be? We’ll add plenty of mozzarella and extra red pepper flakes for some sass.
