Weekly Menu 06.07.26: Keep Your Fortune Cookie, I’ll take an Egg Roll!

The Weekly Menu 06.07.26 includes National Egg Roll Day, which is clearly a sign from the universe to order Chinese takeout. I read once that egg rolls are “America’s favorite deep-fried appetizer,” and honestly, who’s surprised? (Egg rolls: America’s favorite deep-fried appetizer,” The Daily Meal.)
Crispy, savory, and endlessly stuffable, they’re the golden retriever of the appetizer world. Loyal, crowd-pleasing, and impossible to dislike. But let’s be honest: egg rolls (and their saucy, sesame-laced siblings) are best left to the professionals. We’ll be celebrating with Chinese take-out on Wednesday night—no woks required.
Identity Crisis?
That said, egg rolls have been having an identity crisis in the best way. Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls? A family favorite around here. I’ve seen versions stuffed with buffalo chicken, mac and cheese, jalapeño popper filling—you name it, someone’s rolled it up and deep-fried it. It’s like the food world collectively decided that everything tastes better wrapped in a crunchy shell. And honestly? They’re not wrong.
Spoiler alert. We don’t ALL feel the same about Chinese food.
Back dozens and dozens of years ago, when Bert and I were dating, he “loved” Chinese food almost as much as I “loved” the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fast forward a couple of decades, and I’ve developed a strong and abiding tolerance for the Penguins, while Bert’s taste buds have… moved on. I kid. I enjoy the Penguins, even when they suck. (Like this past year.)

Fortunately, Bert still knows how to grill like a champ. He’s on Sunday dinner this week, making steaks. The starter is melty Maple Walnut Baked Brie. We’re finishing up with Whole Wheat Blueberry Bars because ’tis the season. (Frozen blubes work fine too.)
This week’s lineup is pure comfort meets convenience: we’re having burgers on Monday, although we’ll probably go with “boxed burgers”, which we do a lot in the summer. I love the “chicken burgers,” which are alongside the boxed burgers in the freezer section. They’re ridiculously easy (I love any burger that doesn’t need formed), and aren’t a big deal for Bert to grill at the same time. So I stay on my stent diet without any angst. Win-win!
Bert is making “fried rice” on Friday on the Blackstone, but I’m allowing the (unprecedented) two-Chinese meals in one week thing because, honestly, it doesn’t matter what we do at home, it’s not going to taste the same. Although it will be delish.
I’m letting everyone “figure it out” on Saturday. I’m sure we’ll have plenty of leftovers, and if not? Taco Bell is super close.
