Love mushrooms?

Add them! Onions, peppers, hot peppers, even pineapple (!?!?) will find themselves at home on this easy dip. Sub in sausage or ham for the pepperoni for a twist. Anything pizza can do, pizza dip can do better. Extreme Pizza Dip? Absolutely!

Start with an unsliced loaf of bread. You can use pretty much any kind you like, but the Italian bread is BIG, it’s easy to find, and it’s pretty cheap. A round loaf would be pretty too.

Italian bread before the cuts
It looks a little like a butternut squash, but I swear (a lot, actually) that it’s bread.

Use a small serrated knife to cut the top off of the loaf. (Affiliate links follow, see disclaimer page for details.)

Italian Bread cut in half

Then cut the top into bitesize chunks, and hollow out the bread. Cut those pieces into bitesize chunks as well.

Chunks of bread

Combine the softened cream cheese, mayo, five ounces of the pepperoni (cut in chunks), seasonings, and one cup of the mozzarella in a bowl. I normally forget to allow the cream cheese to come to room temp, so I use a microwave safe bowl and heat the cream cheese on high for 45 seconds to a minute before I add in the other ingredients.

Pizza Dip in a clear bowl

Spread the cream cheese mixture into the hollowed out loaf, and put the whole kit and caboodle on a sheet pan that you have sprayed well with cooking spray.

Spread the marinara over the dip. Then sprinkle on the other cup of mozzarella, and top with the remaining pepperoni.

Bake until the dip is bubbly, the bread is browned slightly and the pepperoni is crispy, about twenty minutes.

Hot and gooey pizza dip

Serve immediately. We use a wooden chopping board and supply a serrated knife – when the cubed bread is gone, encourage tearing into the loaf to eat every single bite. You can also cut it into neat pieces, which is not nearly as much fun, but it is a lot neater.
